Traditional carousel with horses, Place Gutenberg, Strasbourg, France
Founded by the Romans in 12 BC, Strasbourg today is the capital of Alsace and - more importantly - the seat of the European Parliament. The city lies in the Upper Rhine Plain on the eastern border of France. In its illustrious history the city has changed hands between France and Germany multiple times. Among others, Strasbourg is famous for Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press (1439), and Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, who wrote the French national anthem “La Marseillaise” in 1792.
